My Experience With TSS Global Business Services As a Graduate Hire

TSS in India has a strong work force ranging from several thousands to lakhs of employees in the services sector. A few giants in this business are always in the race of making stupendous profits. With clients all over the world, striking a deal with the right one can add a fortune to the company's treasury.
TSS recruits under graduates and graduates from top colleges and universities all over India including Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and National Institute of Technology (NIT). Their recruitment process begins with an aptitude test and is followed by a not so technical interview for those who manage to clear the first test. Most of them who clear the first test make their way through with the offer letter in their hands. I was one among the lot of unfortunate people who believed in TSS's brand value without knowing whether TSS was the company for a good start in our careers.
The decision taken while deploying students to various offices all over India is solely made by the company and 70% of the time it matches the students' work location preference he/she made during his/her employment offer. The rest 30% is just random assignment to projects willing to accept graduate hires. I was unfortunate to be deployed in Pune and my work location preference was Bangalore. I raised a relocation request to Bangalore and soon my manager called me for a private chat regarding my request. "Graduate hires are more of an investment to TSS and their requests are ignored", he said as he convinced me that my request was too trivial for the company to waste time on. The kind of work we do is no different from what experienced people do and sometimes we do better work than them. TSS recruits graduate hires with the belief that they would become productive after years of experience and until then they are futile with hours of web browsing being the major part of their work at office.
During our training we were told that the top performers would be assigned to one of the best projects and that he/she would be learning cutting edge technologies. The trainers wanted everyone to pass the test and consequently save their asses from their seniors who questioned them for every failure in the training. Their promises turned out to be false. Being the top rank holders in the training test, my friend and I ended up in a support project where Facebook was the only application used. We never expected years of studying programming languages, operating systems, computer architecture, software engineering would take us to a job where we create or delete a file and start or stop a server in the mid night just to keep the client happy in some other part of the world in a different time zone. This is so not the right job profile a student would like to start his career with.
The pay a graduate hire gets is ten folds less than that of his senior and the work he does is ten folds more. Working on the weekends and during the late night hours of the weekdays is something innate to the word "graduate hire" in TSS. Performance rating is always a default value because managers rarely find time to monitor their people and their work. Increment or appraisal is something a graduate hire never gets.
TSS is growing so enormously that taking care of its budding employees is a trivial issue and is ignored more often. Strong swimmers manage to float amid ocean currents while the weak ones succumb to it and drown. Some others find alternatives like higher studies or product based companies. So my advice is, before starting a career with any service company kindly make it clear that you do not want to see yourself doing anything other than development, if a catapult start is what you're looking for.
